I’m so grateful that Skynd embraced this concept and fostered the vision of something that was truly uncomfortable to even film, much less think about. Something, that by anyone’s standard, would be a complete failure, yet in his eyes, a masterpiece of delicacy. “The idea was built on following his manic progression of working on a recipe. There was something particularly twisted about the idea of him being addicted to cooking shows. For this video, we really wanted to explore the madness, that compulsive energy behind Armin’s frame of mind. We can either live in denial and imagine they don’t exist or we can dig deeper into what makes them tick so we know what to look for. The video was directed by critically acclaimed and Grammy-nominated director PR Brown (Korn, Slipknot, Motley Crue, Audioslave, Miley Cyrus, Green Day, Alicia Keys), who also lensed the video for the previous single “ Chris Watts.”īrown also weighs in on the visual, saying, “Monsters live among us. Meiwes didn’t seem like the typical beast you’d imagine when you think of a ‘cannibal.’ But then again, you might ask yourself, ‘What does a cannibal even look like?’ It’s a story that hasn’t left me for years and I feel like I have finally translated it into music.”
She continues, “When I investigated the case, I watched an interview with him. Armin Meiwes (German: mavs born 1 December 1961) is a German former computer repair technician who achieved international attention for killing and eating a voluntary victim in 2001, whom he had found via the Internet. His urge to own someone and to fully merge with somebody trumped his common sense.” He wanted to reach another level of climax, because fantasies that he had held since he was a little boy weren’t enough for him anymore. Meiwes didn’t have his inner animal tamed. It sounds insane on the surface, but it’s also really sad story about being lonely and engaging in an internal fight of fantasy versus reality. “The arrangement was an entirely consensual cannibalistic murder. “This is just a really bizarre story,” Skynd shares. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the pair delve into one of the most shocking stories of our time with this track and video. They are known for taking inspiration from inexplicable and brutal criminal cases and the mystery surrounding unsolved deaths, and transforming them into songs to remind us of the darkness within the human psyche. Most of the unseen footage that exists is made up of things that you wouldn’t want to see even if you could. Suicides, torture, rape, and murder aren’t exactly things that the regular viewer is clamoring to see on an everyday basis, so maybe it’s for the best if the world is never able to see the full week-long video that the Craigslist Killer filmed, or Armin Mewes’ attempt at cooking dinner. Some of the lost videos that are included on this list are owned by the government, who has only released a portion of the footage, or they’re a part of a larger piece of work and the producers have decided to keep the juiciest pieces of tape on lockdown. A video tape was made of the incident beginning with Meiwes attempting to bite Brandes’ penis off. On March 9, 2001, Brandes and Meiwes met in person. Brandes reached out to Meiwes and the two agreed to meet. Most tapes never released are spoken about in the same hushed tones as snuff films, but that’s not all that’s out there. Meiwes received many responses, but all backed out and Meiwes did not attempt to change their minds. Thanks to the Internet and the ability that it offers the world to proliferate the worst images and videos imaginable, people are able to see some of the most heinous and strange things that have ever been created – or are they? There’s a whole world of secret footage and lost film that’s never been released to the public and likely never will be, either because it’s too traumatizing, or because there’s only one copy of the video and the owner is keeping it under wraps.
